Phoenix, AZ-The Goldwater Institute and News 5 will co-host a gubernatorial candidate forum in Phoenix the evening of Wednesday, October 30, 2002. The event will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Ritz-Carlton Phoenix, 2401 East Camelback Road, and will be televised the afternoon of Sunday, November 3, 2002.

The event will be the third candidate forum hosted by the Goldwater Institute during this campaign season. "We're excited to be able to make this event happen," said News 5 anchor John Du Pre, who will moderate the event. "This will be the last opportunity for voters to see the candidates in one place before they go to the polls."

Invitations have been sent to all four gubernatorial candidates:

  • Barry Hess (L)
  • Richard Mahoney (I)
  • Janet Napolitano (D)
  • Matt Salmon (R)

The forum will commence with brief statements by the candidates. After a series of questions from Goldwater Executive Director Darcy Olsen, the forum will be opened up to questions from members of the audience. The forum will conclude with a two-minute summary by each candidate.

The forum is free of charge and open to members of the public and the media. To RSVP for the event, contact Lindsay Moore at (602) 744-9618, or write to Please RSVP by October 28. Valet parking will be available at the Ritz-Carlton and free parking will be available at the Esplanade.
