Phoenix—Arizona Governor Doug Ducey named former U.S. Senator and Goldwater Institute co-founder Jon Kyl to succeed Senator John McCain in the U.S. Senate. McCain passed away last week after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Goldwater Institute President and CEO Victor Riches has issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement:

“Jon Kyl was one of the founders of the Goldwater Institute 30 years ago, and he has remained a great friend of ours to this day. He is a truly principled statesman whose background and experience are second to none. For as long as he chooses to serve, Jon Kyl will be a great asset to the country in the United States Senate.”

At an event celebrating the Goldwater Institute’s 30th anniversary in Spring 2018, Senator Kyl spoke about former Senator Barry Goldwater’s legacy and the Institute’s impact.

“With Barry Sr., it was all about freedom. He wanted the ability to say and think and do as he wanted, and he wanted others to have the same,” Kyl said. “And he appreciated why that was important to them and the future of the country. That is the work of the Goldwater Institute and why all of you are committed to the same word: freedom.”

About the Goldwater Institute

The Goldwater Institute drives results by working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and strengthen the freedom guaranteed to all Americans in the constitutions of the United States and all 50 states. With the blessing of its namesake, the Goldwater Institute opened in 1988. Its early years focused on defending liberty in Barry Goldwater’s home state of Arizona. Today, the Goldwater Institute is a national leader for constitutionally limited government respected by the left and right for its adherence to principle and real world impact. No less a liberal icon than the New York Times calls the Goldwater Institute a “watchdog for conservative ideals” that plays an “outsize role” in American political life.
