SPN News: Goldwater Institute update (Jan/Feb 2011)

November 19, 2014

This spring the Goldwater Institute will argue its first case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court will hear arguments against Arizona’s “Clean Elections” system, which gives taxpayer-funded candidates matching funds when their privately-funded opponent spends money campaigning. The Institute asked a federal court to block a provision of Obamacare that prevents Congress from repealing the Independent Payment Advisory Board: a newly-created, unregulated board meant to control health care costs. Goldwater Institute investigative journalist Mark Flatten released “Undisciplined Bureaucracy,” a report on the difficulty of firing problem government workers. Flatten discovered instances in which employees threatened bosses, falsified documents or slept on the job and still couldn’t be terminated. Over a two-year period, Arizona state agencies put employees under disciplinary investigation on paid leave for a combined 100,000 hours: the equivalent of 48 years of full-time work.
