Week in Review: What do these 10 states have in common?

Arizona. Nevada. Louisiana. Maryland. Mississippi. North Carolina. Tennessee. Arkansas. South Dakota. And now, Kansas.   

What do they have in common? They’re the first ten states to enact the Goldwater Institute’s Right to Try for Individualized Treatments, as a new wave of patient-centric healthcare reform sweeps the nation. It’s a groundbreaking law that creates a new pathway for patients with rare diseases to access cutting-edge, personalized treatments.  

This important reform is based on a simple concept: You shouldn’t have to beg the government for permission to try to save your own life, especially if you’re suffering from a rare disease, racing against the clock to find a treatment that could help. That’s why we’ll continue working to pass this reform in state after state—until it’s the law of the land.

Fined and Gagged 

The feds slapped a family-run California moving company with a $15 million “age discrimination” fine for hiring younger workers to safely lift and move heavy furniture—then issued a gag order when the company tried to fight back. 

“Keep quiet,” the feds said in banning all public comment about the case…or else.  

The Goldwater Institute is now going to find out why the federal government is targeting this American success story. The federal government is “demanding that we pay an amount that we simply can’t afford for something that we absolutely did not do wrong,” Meathead Movers co-founder Aaron Steed says.  

The American public deserves to know why the federal government is pursuing a baseless attack against a model small business. And if the feds won’t provide answers voluntarily, we’ll get them—in court if necessary.

Tesla’s China Setback v. Arizona’s AV Advantage 

Tesla’s testing and deployment of its Full Self-Driving technology in China appears to have backfired. But there’s a lesson to be learned amid the regulatory quagmire.  

“Tesla’s entanglement with the bureaucratic machinery of state capitalism has only reinforced what should be obvious: the more transparent, stable and innovation-friendly regulatory environment at home in the United States continues to set America apart from its authoritarian competition,” Goldwater Institute President and CEO Victor Riches writes in The Hill.  

No state does it better than Arizona. Indeed, as a new Goldwater report shows, Phoenix has become the national proving ground for autonomous vehicle deployment, thanks to its clarity of rules and forward-leaning infrastructure. It’s a stark contrast, as Riches explains: “Innovation will not flourish when government prescribes methods and outcomes.”
