Week in Review: The Egg Mandate That’s Cracking Freedom

Unelected officials are trying to tell Tucson restaurateur Grant Krueger what eggs he can and cannot sell. He decided to sue these unelected “egg bureaucrats” and defend his freedom. “It’s the principle of the matter,” the Arizona Daily Star reported this week. “It has to do particularly with the limitation of gubernatorial or agency powers, far more than it has to do with just eggs,” Grant said.

The Goldwater Institute and Pacific Legal Foundation are helping Grant sue the Arizona Department of Agriculture for unconstitutionally mandating that only cage-free eggs be sold in the state. It’s part of our nation-leading work to fight the Administrative State, whose unelected regulators write rules with the force of law and prosecute alleged violations—all while combining legislative, executive, and judicial authority with zero checks and balances.

A swanky rooftop pool. A gym overlooking the mountains. A sauna and steam room. Those are amenities in a gleaming new luxury high-rise in downtown Phoenix—and government bureaucrats are sticking taxpayers with a $7 million bill to pay for it. We’re not going to let that stand.

“Here you have the city of Phoenix picking winners and losers, enriching one private special interest at the cost to the rest of us and to all taxpayers,” Goldwater VP for Litigation Jon Riches tells Arizona’s Family KTVK/KPHO-TV.

This week, Riches urged the Arizona Court of Appeals to strike down Phoenix’s $7 million handout to a private real estate developer for its new high-rise downtown. It’s time for governments to stop doling out taxpayer dollars like candy.

The Biden Administration’s Department of Education imposed its largest fine ever—$37.7 million on Phoenix’s Grand Canyon University—despite the school’s track record of success. They’re refusing to say why, so Goldwater is suing the feds to get answers.

The Department of Education should “end its bizarre witch hunt against Grand Canyon University,” says the Arizona Republic’s Jon Gabriel. He’s right—and federal agencies should stop harassing organizations it doesn’t like.
