Week in Review: Small Businesses, Big Victory

Exciting news out of the Mountain State: Goldwater has enacted sweeping protections for small businesses in West Virginia by passing our Home-Based Business Fairness Act. This reform allows hardworking entrepreneurs in the state to run a no-impact small business from home without having to first jump through hoops to get a costly, time-consuming permission slip from their local government.  

Unfortunately, when it comes to regulating businesses, many local governments focus on imposing arbitrary restrictions rather than protecting their citizens’ rights. That’s why Goldwater has passed our Home-Based Business Fairness reform to great success in states around the country.  

After all, your right to earn a living doesn’t go away just because you work from home.

No More Rubber Stamps in Texas 

Rule-by-bureaucrat just went down in yet another state. Last week, Goldwater enacted our landmark judicial deference reform in Texas—less than a month after Kentucky similarly eliminated automatic deference to government agencies’ interpretations of laws and their own regulations. 

It’s Goldwater’s latest victory over the Administrative State and its army of bureaucrats that have long controlled nearly every aspect of American life. Goldwater has already helped numerous Americans beat the bureaucratic bullies, and we’ve ended judicial deference in state after state.  

We’re holding government agencies accountable to the law—and to the American people.

College Board Watering Down Exams…Again? 

They’re doing it again.  

A Goldwater Institute investigation previously found that the College Board, a billion-dollar, taxpayer-funded organization, was using its immense power over curriculum to embrace race-based ideologies while censoring history for millions of high schoolers.  

Now, the College Board’s decision to move most Advanced Placement exams to a digital format “raises the disturbing possibility that these exams will be further watered down,” Goldwater Senior Constitutionalism Fellow Timothy K. Minella tells the Washington Times. He adds, “The digital SAT tests students on their comprehension of very short reading passages, instead of longer, more challenging texts.”  

It’s time to end the taxpayer-subsidized College Board monopoly and restore education rigor.
