A Year of Victories for Individual Liberties

Governments at all levels are trampling on Americans’ constitutional rights. The Goldwater Institute’s Scharf-Norton Center for Constitutional Litigation exists to take the fight for liberty to court and defend individual rights across the country. In 2020, our team of litigators won important victories for individuals who saw their freedoms under attack. Here are three of those stories.

This Man’s Livelihood Was Saved, Thanks to the Goldwater Institute

When the government steals an innocent man’s Jeep and demands $1,900 to return it, you really can’t call it anything but theft. That’s what happened to Tucson handyman Kevin McBride, who was left stranded when police confiscated his Jeep — his primary source of income — using civil forfeiture laws. The Goldwater Institute threatened to sue the government and Kevin got his Jeep back. Read more about the story here.

Marine’s Second Amendment Rights Restored, Thanks to the Goldwater Institute

For five years, D’Andre Bradley stood ready to defend his country as a U.S. Marine. But with violence raging near his Chicago-area home, the State of Illinois prevented him from exercising his Second Amendment right to bear arms. The Goldwater Institute sued the state of Illinois and ensured that his Second Amendment rights are protected. Read more about the story here.

High School Student’s Free Speech Defended, Thanks to the Goldwater Institute

Florida high school student Tyler Maxwell wanted to show his support for President Donald Trump in the 2020 campaign, but his school shut down his freedom of speech. The Goldwater Institute stepped in, defended the First Amendment, and secured a victory for Tyler. Read more about the story here.
