Week in Review: Punished for opposing DEI?

July 19, 2024

Racial discrimination. Arbitrary quotas. Top-down mandates from above imposed by unelected bureaucrats. These are the dictates of Kentucky’s Council on Postsecondary Education—a powerful body that holds punitive sway over the state’s public colleges and universities.

An exclusive new Goldwater Institute report reveals the extent of the council’s power—including the ability to punish those who don’t comply with its arbitrary orders. It’s the latest example of divisive dogma being forced on America’s students through the nation’s higher ed system, even as Goldwater is spearheading the charge to defeat the discriminatory, politically charged tenets of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in state after state.

It’s simple: Taxpayer-funded discrimination has no place in higher education.

Snitches Get…A Pat on the Back?

The Gilbert, Ariz., Town Council wants neighbors to snitch on one another. Last month, the council passed an ordinance that encourages neighbors to report anything “unsightly” in their neighboring backyards, and allows for property to be inspected at any time, with or without the presence of the owners.

What counts as “unsightly”? Essentially, anything the town doesn’t believe looks nice.

The ordinance comes after Goldwater uncovered how Gilbert’s “Office of Big Brother” is weaponizing the government’s power to ensure conformity to leftist ideology. It all highlights an important truth: “It is in quiet town hall meetings where many freedoms slip by the wayside, which is why citizens must be vigilant in holding local government officials accountable,” Goldwater Staff Attorney Stacy Skankey writes.

WATCH: Liberty Prevails

Freedom was on the docket at the U.S. Supreme Court this year, and liberty prevailed.

“The Supreme Court struck a blow against the Administrative State”— the unelected bureaucrats who write rules with the force of law—by striking down judicial “deference” to federal administrative agencies, Goldwater VP for Litigation Jon Riches writes in the Wall Street Journal. The high court also “took the first step toward a rational approach to the problem of homelessness” by removing cities’ excuse for failing to enforce the law, Goldwater VP for Legal Affairs Timothy Sandefur adds in Fox News.

What does it all mean? During a special virtual event this month, Sandefur and Riches discussed this year’s most important cases and their ramifications for the future of liberty.

We are grateful for your support of the Goldwater Institute’s efforts to advance and defend liberty throughout the United States. For over 36 years, we’ve been defending the rights of Americans to live their lives free from government interference.

And Goldwater is unique in that we direct our efforts to the 50 states where we introduce and advance innovative ideas that expand freedom. And we fight in courtrooms and capitals nationwide to defend individual liberty.

In 2024 alone, we scored over 50 policy and litigation victories defending liberty!

And that’s just the beginning.

Our plans for 2025 include:

  • Stopping pernicious DEI and other woke programs in America’s universities.
  • Ensuring that patients suffering from rare and terminal diseases have access to cutting-edge, lifesaving medical treatments, without having to first seek permission from the government.
  • Defending parental rights across the United States so that parents can send their kids to the school that best fits their needs, free from leftist indoctrination.
  • Eliminating government interference in the fundamental right of individuals to own property and use it as they see fit.
  • And much, much more

We seek to restore the presumption of liberty; that people are free to act without first asking permission from the government.

But we cannot do this without you. Will you join us as we fight to preserve and advance liberty throughout the country? As we seek new and innovative ways to defend freedom in all 50 states?
