Week in Review: Biden’s Latest Assault on Healthcare Freedom

September 8, 2023

A new Biden administration policy would torpedo access to low-cost health insurance for millions. But the Goldwater Institute is stepping in to defend Americans’ right to control their healthcare decisions.

The Biden administration rule caps the maximum length of short-term limited duration (STLDI) plans, which offer cheaper coverage that millions of Americans rely on, to four months as opposed to four years. It would strip coverage from sick people and leave them vulnerable to expensive medical bills, lead to higher insurance premiums, and significantly increase the number of uninsured Americans. That’s why, joining a coalition of 40 healthcare policy experts, Goldwater signed onto a letter to top Biden administration Cabinet officials urging them to ditch the policy.

Goldwater is spearheading the nationwide fight to expand healthcare freedom, passing our landmark federal Right to Try law so that terminally ill Americans can access experimental treatments without begging the government for permission. Moreover, we’ve expanded the Right to Try to personalized treatments in Arizona and Nevada—and those states are just the start. Now, we’re making things crystal clear to the Biden administration: limiting affordable and accessible healthcare options that already exist and have been working for years will only hurt hard-working Americans.

Goldwater Challenges Disenfranchisement of Millions

Disenfranchised.

An unconstitutional system denies millions of Arizonans the right to vote for or against public officials whose decisions affect the entire state. Now the Goldwater Institute is suing to uphold Arizonans’ right to hold the judiciary accountable.

Arizonans periodically vote on whether to retain each of the justices on the Arizona Supreme Court. But when it comes to judges on the Arizona Court of Appeals, which for most litigants is the court of last resort, voters’ choices are arbitrarily limited by geography to only certain judges—even though Court of Appeals decisions set statewide legal precedent for all Arizonans.

This week the Goldwater Institute filed suit on behalf of four disenfranchised voters, urging the Arizona Supreme Court to ensure all voters have an equal say in the retention of all judges to the Arizona Court of Appeals. After all, Arizona’s Constitution requires that “all elections be free and equal” and that the right to vote “equally belong to all citizens.”

The Goldwater Institute will always defend voters’ right to have an equal say in holding their government accountable. It’s the proper constitutional course—and it protects all voters.
