Free Movie Event: See The Hong Konger in Phoenix on 8/11/22

July 14, 2022

It’s a story that cannot die in a prison cell. When Hong Kong’s basic freedoms come under attack, one man finds himself in the crosshairs of the state, and he must choose between defending Hong Kong’s long-standing liberties, or his own freedom.

The Goldwater Institute invites you to a complimentary screening of the must-see documentary The Hong Konger at 6:30 PM on August 11th in Phoenix. This event is held in partnership with the Acton Institute and Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.

More Details about the Event

From Europe, to Africa, to Asia, the forces of tyranny are once again advancing against the free people of the world. Nowhere are the stakes greater than in China. Now the Goldwater Institute, in partnership with the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation and the Acton Institute, invite you to see the story of one of Asia’s bravest defenders of liberty: Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai.

After escaping the People’s Republic of China at the age of 12, Lai worked his way up from the floor of a textile factory to becoming a successful entrepreneur and publisher of Apple Daily, one of Hong Kong’s leading newspapers. But when his island home was turned over to Communist rule in 1997, he chose to stay, to defend his city’s freedoms. An outspoken advocate for democracy and free speech, Lai was at the forefront of pro-democracy protests until 2021, when he was jailed for participating in a vigil in memory of the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

But Jimmy Lai’s fight for freedom is not just a story about Asia. As Barry Goldwater reminded us, “American freedom has always depended on what is happening beyond our shores.” As the darkness of tyranny spreads in China, it casts its shadow, too, on the West.

Learn more about this story at our free screening of  The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai’s Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom. The show will start at at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, at the AMC Arizona Center 24 theater, 565 N. 3rd St., Phoenix.

After this screening of the film, the discussion continues with Ambassador Andrew Bremberg (President of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation), Eric Kohn (Associate Producer of The Hong Konger), and the Goldwater Institute’s Timothy Sandefur.

It will be an enlightening and important evening for lovers of liberty everywhere.
